I live in an old fashioned neighborhood where we can walk to the grocery, the post office, the library and the river. What else does a girl need? Ok. Coffee shops—there are four that I can walk to. But to make it even sweeter, my neighborhood has bookstores.
This was lovely. I want to hear more stories about your fantastically walkable neighborhood! We once lived near a town square like that and I pushed my baby in the stroller (he is now twelve years old) to get coffee or to stop by the post office to mail vintage dresses I was selling in my Etsy shop at the time. I think those post-office walks single-handedly helped me lose much of my pregnancy weight, in fact. I so enjoyed your chapbook of poems, by the way! Now I want to read “Elemental.” The poem you shared in this post is also wonderful. I dearly love your writing style.
Elemental is sublime! Kortney, it’s so good to see the people you love in this post. The island sounds like a perfect place to reconnect and relax together.
The blueberry farmer, at the farm where we've picked for 17 summers, died at age 94. Her name was Ann. We didn't know what was going to happen to the farm. Her family let us pick last season for free while the farm was for sale. Another local family bought the farm and is going to keep selling blueberries.
It's strange how I didn't realize how much these places nourish us until they might be lost.
Oh, I love the image of a stroller loaded with vintage dresses! Thank you so much for your kind words about the poems, Heather. It's such a gift to have a reader like you.
Here's today's walkable neighborhood story: we walked to the river + had lunch. Then the kids climbed trees to celebrate Ascension!
Your island reminds me of Maiden’s Cliff outside Camden, Maine. We have gone blueberry picking there a few times (when we have been in Maine in July/August). It has beautiful views of a lake and wild blueberries. 🫐 We always revisit Blueberries for Sal around that time.
Arches! A great bookstore. I’m too far south to visit and often but I try once or twice a year. Met the bookseller when he was just opening up, at the Rose Coty Used Book Fair.

These are decidedly not wild blueberries, and there aren't any bears! But Sal is always close by when we are picking!

So glad you know about Arches. It's a great place because Adam is a great person. His handprints are all over that place!
You have good kids <3 and a good life!! and a good ear.
Yes, yes, and thank you! 💙
